Steven G. Porter

Remsen – Steven G. Porter, 67, Coach, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at Wynn Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on September 13, 1959 in Waterville, ME, a son of Reginald and Marie Louise Gagne Porter. In 1963 his family relocated to Boonville, NY, where Steve grew up, receiving his education at Adirondack Central School, graduating with the Class of 1977. While in his youth he enjoyed assisting his father as ballboy for the Adirondack football and basketball teams. Thus began a life of dedication to teaching, coaching, training, and supporting decades of student athletes.

Steve returned to Maine, where he completed his secondary education at the University of Maine, receiving his Masters Degree in physical education. While attending UMaine he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He then returned home to Boonville. This is also where he began his coaching career, serving as the assistant coach of Adirondack Varsity Football team, and also coached Legion Baseball.

In 1984, Steve started his career as a physical education teacher at West Canada Valley Central School. Through the years at WCV, he coached both modified and varsity sports including football, basketball, boys swimming, and baseball. One of the highlights of his coaching career was to coach his son Tyler’s Little League team, winning the Northern Community All Star Little League District 9 Champions.

Along with Steve’s knack for coaching, came his knack for winning. He coached the Boys Varsity Basketball team for a total of 26 years at WCV. He had numerous undefeated seasons (20-0), with a record 406 wins and 158 loses, his teams won 13 League Championships, 3 Section III Titles, 2 NYS Regional Titles, and in 1995-1996 and 2007-2008 NYS Final Four teams. The 2013-2014 season brought induction into the Section III Boys Basketball Hall of Fame.

Steve’s baseball teams at WCV did just as impressive on the diamond, securing 5 League Championships and 2 Section III titles. He also had the pleasure of serving as assistant coach for the 1997-1998 Boys Varsity Football team where they won the State Championship title. Steve also coached the Boys swim team. He also coached various other intramural sports and ran the WCV summer swim program. He completed his teaching career at West Canada Valley Central School, retiring in 2015.

Besides his own teams, Steve enjoyed cheering on his favorite professional teams including the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, and he also was a fan of SU Orange football and basketball. Steve lived a life of selfless dedication to others on and off the field. He very generously donated a white board for another school district.

He is survived by his loving companion Carol Lacomb, Remsen, his son Tyler Porter, Port Jefferson Station, NY, his aunt Joan Gagnon, Winslow, ME, numerous cousins in ME and PA, including Doug and Barb Cote, Quakertown, PA, many nieces and nephews, including his birthday buddy Tripp Spain. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law Carolyn Claytor and Ronald Nellenbach, sisters and brothers-in-law: Larry and Brandi Staring, Patricia Bronson, Andrew and Leeanne Gipson, John Lacomb, Jr., Laurie Lacomb and Ernie Moffat, many longtime friends to many to name.

Steve was predeceased by his father Reginald in 2009, and his mother Louise in 2019, and numerous aunts and uncles.

In keeping with his wishes there will be no services. A Celebration of his Life will be held on October 11, at Patty Jeans Country Restaurant, 8318 State Route 28, Newport, NY, beginning at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the Porter family kindly asks those wishing to contribute to consider helping with Steve’s Celebration of Life or with future memorial efforts being created in his honor. Contributions may be made toward the Celebration of Life, including food and supplies, or by donating a basket for the Chinese auction.
