Clinton- Lawrence F. Smith, 83, of Applewood Community, and a former resident of Boonville and Turin, passed away at Wynn Hospital, Utica, on Friday, April 24, 2026.

Affectionately known as Larry, he was born on February 13, 1943, in Oneida Hospital, a son of Virgil and Phyllis Hiller Smith. His early days were spent on Deans Highway, in Lairdsville, NY. Later his family moved to Jackson Hill in Boonville, settling on the Jackson farm. The Jackson Farm was well known across the North Country by its very large barn, and long barn bridge which extended over Jackson Hill Road.

Larry attended Boonville Central School, where he graduated with the Class of 1961. On August 14, 1965, Larry was united in marriage with Joy Curtis of Turin, at the Turin Methodist Church. For many years the couple lived in Turin, before relocating to North Carolina, where the couple lived for many years. Later the couple returned to Turin where they lived until moving to Applewood Community. Joy, who was a retired school bus driver for the South Lewis School District, Turin, passed away on November 17, 2010.

For 40 years. Mr. Smith was employed in the milk delivery business. For many years he was employed as a milkman at Fairchild Dairy, Rossdale Dairy; later for several years he was employed as a milk truck driver for Mercers Dairy of Boonville. Larry was also employed as a tractor trailer driver and Joy often rode with Larry.

Larry possessed a lifelong love and affection for animals of all kinds. He and Joy raised and gave a good home to many cats and dogs throughout their marriage. While a youth on the Jackson Farm, he raised cows and chickens and was active in 4-H and while in high school, an active member of F.F.A. He enjoyed showing cattle at the Boonville Fair for many years.. In addition Larry was an avid Syracuse University Football and Basketball Fan. He also enjoyed car racing and spent many happy hours at the Utica Rome Speedway and also attended other area race tracks and watched NASCAR and truck racing on television.

He was of the Methodist faith and attended the Laridsville United Methodist Church. He will be missed by his church family and by his many friends who he met over a wide area during his life. Larry also was a volunteer firefighter at the Turin Fire Company.

Larry is survived by his sister, Lorna Manley Cooke, Clinton; niece, Michelle R. Manley, nephew, Matt (Amy) Manley, nephew, Ryan Curtis; sister in law, Susan Curtis, Turin and special cousins. In addition to his wife, Joy, Larry was predeceased by his son, Shawn, in 1991; a sister, Elaine Malecki, his parents, Virgil and Phyllis, a nephew, William I. Phillips and his mother in law, Jane Curtis. He is also survived by his beloved feline friend, Abby.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Interment will at in Turin Cemetery, at the convenience of his immediate family. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502, or to The Anita Stevens Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, New York 13502. His arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville, NY.
