Rome – Georgeanna M. Howanietz, 89, of West Embargo Street, passed away at her residence, on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

Georgeanna was born on the Howanietz homestead farm in Boonville on September 4, 1933, a daughter of Stefan and Catherine Radwanski Howanietz. She was raised on the farm while attending a rural school on the old West Leyden Road, before attending and graduating from Boonville Central School, with the Class of 1950. Afterwards, Georgeanna obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1955. In the fall of 1955, Georgeanna began her Home Economics teaching career in Tuxedo Park, NY, before transferring to a position in St. Johnsville, NY. Later, Georgeanna accepted the Home Economics teaching position with the Rome City School District at George R. Staley Jr. High School. This was her favorite of her tenures, and she retired from Staley in 1989 after 29 years of service

Education was very important to Georgeanna, and she went on to receive her Master’s Degree from Syracuse University, and continued to take college courses through her adult life. Georgeanna enjoyed skiing, boating (both power and sailing), and gardening. For many years she had attended Zion Episcopal Church in Rome. Georgeanna was a member and held office in various professional and civic organizations including: the NYS Home Economics Assn., American Assn. of Family & Consumer Sciences, Life member of Gardeners of America, Upstate Apple Users Group, the Adirondack Mountain Club, Copper City Community Connections, and the Mohawk Valley Learning in Retirement Group.

Georgeanna is survived by her nieces: Christine Reczek Taylor (Gerry), Colorado, and Marianne (Jim) Pheobus, Idaho, a nephew William (Barb) Belewich, Ava, many great nieces and nephews, and several cherished friends and neighbors including Peg (Pat) Corbett. She was predeceased by her siblings: Rose Reczek, Alice Belewich, and Walter Howanietz, and nephews: Larry Belewich, Wally Howanietz, and Andrew Reczek.

Friends and family members of Georgeanna M. Howanietz are invited to join in celebrating her life on Friday, July 18, 2025. Ms. Howanietz’s remains will be interred at 1pm at the Boonville Cemetery on Moose River Road. A Celebration of Life gathering will take place between 4 and 6pm on the same date at the Rome Art and Community Center, 308 W. Bloomfield Street. The event at the Art Center will feature the Alliance Classical Players woodwind quintet. Quintet members are Cornelia Brewster, flute; Janelle Bookhout, oboe; Colleen O’Neil, clarinet; Judy Marchione, bassoon; and Claire McKenney, French horn.
