John C. Higby

August 16, 1929 — February 11, 2012

Constableville- John C. Higby, 82, a native and lifelong resident of Crofoot Hill Road, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012, after a brief illness at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville. He was born on August 16, 1929, at the Higby Homestead on Crofoot Hill Road, near Constableville, a son of Clark G. and Charlotte Klett Higby. John graduated from Constableville Central School with the Class of 1948. Mr. Higby was an Election Inspector, family barber and helped at the family country store. He was a co-owner and operator of Higby Bros. Dairy Farm for many years. John enjoyed hunting rabbits with his hound dogs, picking blue berries, bird watching and gardening. He will be greatly missed by his family and his beloved feline companion "Tommy." In addition to his brother Ronald W. Higby, Constableville, John is survived by nieces and nephews: Marilyn Boston, Ajax, Ontario; Martha Faber, Boonville; Marsha Higby, Utica; Mark (Jolene) Higby, Constableville; Marlene (Dana) Arnold, Barneveld; Marie Higby, Columbus, OH; Melanie (Eric) Niermeyer, Vestal, Evelyn (Pat) King, Seabright, NY, Leonard (Pat) Crane, Hastings, NY, Randy Crane, Sandy Crane, both Constableville, Suzanne (Stanley) Parker, Lafargeville, NY, Dale Pledger, Hammond, NY, Carol Pledger, Plesis, NY, James Pledger, Aubrey Pledger, Michael Pledger, Vicki Pledger, and Tammy Pledger, all of Alexandria Bay, NY, many great nieces and great nephews and many great great nieces and great great nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Betty (Ray) Crane, and Ruth (Harold) Pledger, by a sister in law, Regina Higby, on February 5, 2012, and by a nephew, Darrell Pledger. His family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Constableville Fire Co. Ambulance Attendants, and the nursing staff in the Emergency Room, I.C.U. and East Wing, at Lewis Co. General Hospital and to Dr. Lynn Pisaniello, for the kind and compassionate care they all gave to John. His services will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Billie Jean Melton, pastor of the South Lewis Parish of United Methodist Churches will officiate. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery, Constableville. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Turin Fire Co. Ambulance Fund, or to Constableville Fire Co. Ambulance, or to Constableville United Methodist Church.
