Gwen M. Wheelock

Rome - Gwen M. Wheelock, 85, previously of Syracuse, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021 after a brief illness at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Facility, New Hartford. Affectionately known as "Stretch", Gwen was born in Boonville on January 31, 1936, a daughter of Francis and Edna VanNort Wheelock. She was a graduate of New Hartford High School with the Class of 1954. After graduation she was employed in the accounting department of NY Telephone Co., where she worked for 11 years. She was transferred to Syracuse in 1965, where she worked for 37 years, and retired in 1991. While working in Utica, she made her home with her family, the Obernesser's. Gwen was of the Protestant faith. She was an active bowler and golfer. She belonged to the NY Telephone Pioneers of America, and was a devoted Syracuse and NY Yankee fan. She leaves her surviving sister Lorraine (Bill) Obernesser, New Hartford; sister-in-laws: Beverly Wheelock, and Nancy Wheelock, Boonville, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters: Jean, Grace, Thelma, and Joyce; brothers: Harold and George. She is also survived by her special friends in Syracuse: Ellen, Helen, Carol, Janet, Robbie and Rosalie. Her family extends thanks to the special caregiver she has had for the last 3 months. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 29, at 1:00 pm at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Interment will follow in Kinne Cemetery, Litchfield, NY. There will be a calling hour from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boonville United Methodist Church, 105 Ann St. Boonville, New York 13309.
